AVDF Leadership Award
$100,000 AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP IN ADVANCING CARING ATTITUDES GIVEN TO COMMONWEAL’S INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF HEALTH AND ILLNESS   
  • Commonweal’s Institute for the Study of Health and Illness (ISHI) has received the first AVDF Award for Leadership in Advancing Caring Attitudes. The award, made May 4, 2012 at the conclusion of a conference attended by recent AVDF grantees, recognizes ISHI founder Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, for her outstanding and sustained contributions to creating a more caring environment within the health care system.   In addition to the acknowledgement of the recipient’s exemplary role in fostering compassionate patient care, the Award also includes a grant for $100,000 to support the ongoing work of ISHI. Whats New in 2010
In its October 2010 meeting, the Board decided to expand the Religion program beyond exclusive support for theological education to include a pilot program for projects that foster and encourage interfaith dialogue and understanding.  The goal is to support projects that deepen knowledge of the beliefs and practices of major world religions as well as promote respect and appreciation for the growing number of faith traditions represented in today’s American society.  Grant proposals in this area are currently accepted by invitation only.
What's New in Grants
On February 8, 2013, nineteen grants totaling over $3.5 million were approved by the Board.

On October 12, 2012, thirteen grants totaling over $2.8 million were approved by the Board.  This brings the total grants approved in 2012 to $9.6 million
