The Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religion proposes a summer institute in religious literacy. The grant will cover all expenses for the participation of 12 journalists from the United States for the next three summers, 2020-2022. This project is part of an effort by the Ansari Institute in Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs to build partnerships between academia, media, faith leaders, and policy circles to change the conversation about religion where religion is seen as force for good and as a resource for making a better world rather than a problem to be managed. The institute will accept applications from journalists who are actively working on projects. They will come to the summer institute with drafts that will be critiqued and refined in active conversation with their colleagues along with instructors/facilitators and faith leaders from Michiana. In addition to the workshop environment, participants will benefit from readings and interactive lectures on American religious history, religion in global affairs, religion in public education, and religion and the media. The short-term impact we expect is a personal transformation of participants; the long-term impact will be a change in the national conversation about religion.
