The Behavior Change for Good Initiative (BCFG) of the University of Pennsylvania will design and execute a megastudy, simultaneously testing a variety of interventions for supporting first-year college students in the 2025-2026 academic year. The university will partner with U.S. colleges to provide a customized program for their incoming students. The aim is to include over 100,000 first-year students at colleges with relatively high dropout rates that collectively serve a diverse set of students. Students will be randomly assigned to one of ~10 versions of the program, which will include two components: (1) an initial online activity that students will complete as part of their school’s enrollment process, and (2) follow-up text messages sent after the online activity and throughout the fall term. The programs tested will evaluate the BCFG Scientific Team’s best ideas for improving student outcomes, informed by insights from previous behavioral science research. The university will compare students’ rates of re-enrollment and students’ GPAs across the different versions of the program to assess whether and which of the different programming designs improve student outcomes. Findings from the megastudy will offer guidance on how educational institutions can increase student success at scale.
