A recent study by Interfaith America, one of the organizations at the forefront of interfaith cooperation, found that less than a third of students believed they had actually developed better skills to interact with people of different faiths during their time in college. The University of St. Francis is a small, Catholic liberal arts college; students take theology courses as part of their general education curriculum. However, the findings from Interfaith America underscore the need to create space for courageous multi-faith collaborations and conversations on college campuses. The University of St. Francis will undertake a four-pronged approach that includes activities such as faculty research, course design, professional development and community outreach resulting in deliverables that include a needs assessment, new faith clubs, a course called Interfaith Understanding, faculty development workshops, and an Interfaith Dinner Conversations series. The project team expects to provide students and faculty with opportunities for multi-faith experiences resulting in increased faculty and student interfaith leadership and religious literacy on campus.
