The Debate Across the Curriculum (DAC) Project integrates debate and civil discourse exercises into lower-division courses across the University of Utah to teach students early in their educational pathways how to engage in respectful, constructive conversations when discussing complex, challenging, and even polarizing topics in and out of the classroom. Such exercises foster meaningful dialogue, exchange of ideas, and learning from diverse perspectives; cultivate greater tolerance, understanding, and appreciation across differences; and prepare students to participate as active, civic-minded citizens. To achieve this goal, the project team will develop program materials based on evidence-based best practices and train faculty coaches across all academic disciplines to integrate these practices in their classes as well as support other colleagues seeking to do the same. To launch the campus-wide initiative, 28-32 recruited faculty will implement the program in at least one course, initially reaching 750-960 students with the goal of reaching thousands every semester thereafter by making DAC a feature of general education learning outcomes at the university and fostering an authentic shift toward open dialogue and civil discourse in the community.
