Certain minority students are underrepresented as recipients of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) bachelor’s degrees. Addressing this requires promoting a diverse talent pipeline in STEM education and training. The American Cancer Society Diversity in Cancer Research (DICR) Internship Program is designed for and offered to underrepresented minority students at the undergraduate level, a critical pre-career exploration point, who are interested in STEM. DICR Internships connect students with leading scientists in the field while providing opportunities to discover and develop a sense of purpose concerning their education, eventual research occupations, and roles as citizens. Through the DICR Internship Program, ACS partners with a select group of academic institutional partners to provide unique and impactful opportunities that empower historically underrepresented students in STEM fields, engaging them in hands-on cancer research to better equip them to pursue meaningful biomedical careers. The aim is to advance diversity in the scientific workforce, support future talent in the cancer community, drive innovation and discovery, and ultimately break down barriers and rectify historical inequities.
